Søndeled

picture missing

The Søndeled church west of Risør town. Originally it is a cruciform stone church built in the last half of the twelfth century. In 1752 a new steeple was built and in the 1760s three wooden wings was added. The original stone church was kept as the west wing and the church could now accommodate a much larger congregation. This district may be viewed as the east end of the Bible belt extending southwest, west and north (along the coast) and my impression is that the churches get more voluminous further into the belt.
