Húsavík is still a fishing harbour, but starting in 1995, whale watching has become more important. There are now (2013) six of these traditional Icelandic oak boats taking the tourists out to sea. You may also join a fast RIB trip, dressed in watertight orange garments. The RIBs may also offer puffin watching.

Húsavík has about 2200 inhabitants. There are hotels and guest houses, restaurants and cafés. Horse riding is a popular activity, else the site is a suitable starting point for various excursions. And on a rainy day you may visit the Húsavík Whale Museum.

The beautiful Húsavíkurkirkja. Built from timber from Norway and consecrated 1907, the architect was Rognvaldur Olafsson.

The church interior is quite unusual. The entrance is on the left side and you move along the left (north) wall and then sidewise into a seat row or in front of the altar, which is on the east side as it should. This church does not have the traditional pulpit.
