Bryne

a small town with a great sculpture park

Bryne became a town as late as 2001. It lies on the old stony farmland of Jæren, quite near and south of the much larger town Stavanger. The number of inhabitants is about 8000.

Arne Garborg

This is the upper end of Mølledammen (The Millpond) and the surrounding park, the center of Bryne. Behind the water the statue of the writer and journalist Arne Garborg (1851–1924) who was born near by and whose soul never left Jæren. The artist is Fritz Røed.

Another man born here was Fritz Røed (1928–2002). He became a famous sculptor, working mainly in Italy, but also in Mexico and Norway. Shortly before he died he presented the idea of a sculpture park at (and in) Mølledammen (The Millpond). The project, comprising ten sculptures, was carried through by his friend the sculptor Skule Waksvik and the park was opened 1 October 2004.

'The Lapwing'. This sculpture was only sketched by Fritz Røed, and Skule Waksvik made it after his friend's death. The lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) is a typical bird in Jæren (but not among the ducks). The coat of arms of the district Time also depicts the lapwing. Bryne lies in Time, housing half its population.

(No artist – no art.) At the lower end of the millpond is of course the milldam. (There is also an old mill.) Only a part of the brook is led through the pond.

There are more sculptures in Bryne than those made by Fritz Røed. This one is a war memorial by Ståle Kyllingstad (1903–1987) standing near the Town Hall.

Of course – there is more to Bryne than the park and the sculptures. I spent only a late evening and a morning there, but I hope to go back and see and photograph more of this nice town.
