During the Great Nordic War (1700–1721) an army of ten thousand Swedish soldiers led by General Armfeldt was sent to conquer Trondheim. They arrived late in the autumn of 1718 and was met by nearly seven thousand Norwegian soldiers. About a thousand soldiers were stationed on Kristiansten, four hundred on the Munkholmen Fortress (see next image caption), and the rest in the town. The Swedes had no success and they were haunted by illness finally reducing the army by half. In January 1719 General Armfeldt retreated with the rest of the army to Sweden. The met a snow storm in the border mountains and most of them froze to death or died shortly after. |
