Old houses on Lærdalsøyri in the evening. An "ør/øyr" is the flat land where a river flows into the sea. Most of these places have been centers of human activities for hundreds or even thousands of years, and many still have picturesque and interesting houses and narrow streets. Lærdalsøyri is no exception; some of the old houses are protected by law. Lærdalsøyri is situated near the inner end of our longest (and deepest) fjord, Sognefjorden. (A tourist brochure says that it is the longest fjord in the world. Anyway, the length is roughly 200 km and the greatest depth is 1308 m.) |
