The Værnes church is said to be the oldest standing building in Norway, the work on it starting about 1085. It's situated near the east end of the runway of the Trondheim airport, Værnes, east of Trondheim. Also, it is situated north of the Stjørdal River, on the south side of the river lies the Lånke church and the famous village Hell.

There are four Commonwealth war graves at the Værnes church. A few weeks after the Second World War ended, a unit of British Spitfire pilots with planes and mechanics came to Værnes to help build a Norwegian air force. Some of them were evidently still high on their own adrenaline, and during that summer four of them died in various accidents.
