A mountain and some clever architects
– and a bit of Norwegian history
– and the cleanup of a firing range
The mountain in the centre of the picture is Snøhetta. It has ten peaks above 2000 metres, the highest one is 2286 metres and is one of those accessible without mountaineer's gear. This road comes from Folldal and intersects with the main north–south road through the country (E6) in Hjerkinn, where a few houses are seen in the picture. Hjerkinn belongs to the municipality Dovre and both Hjerkinn and Snøhetta are situated on the mountain plateu Dovre. At the Constitution Assembly May 1814 this mountain plateau became a national symbol: "Agreed and loyal till Dovre falls"

On a hilltop on the west side of the Hjerkinn road intersection, less than half a hour's walk (1.5 km) from the parking, you can visit "Viewpoint Snøhetta". It was opened in 2011 after being designed by the Norwegian company Snøhetta, known for e.g. the new Library of Alexandria, the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center, and the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet (and later several other opera houses with walkable roofs).

On the Dovre mountain plateau live wild reindeer and also wild musk oxen once imported from Greenland. With some luck you may catch a glimpse of them. Those reindeer are very shy. The musk oxen are not, and if you go closer than, let's say 200 metres, they may attack, and they run faster than you.

The view towards northwest: To the right Snøhetta and to the left Svånåtindan, distance 16–18 km. This area was used as a firing range by the army, later also by the air force, in the years 1923–1999. During those years the area was extended to 165 km2. In the period 2006–2020 it was cleaned up – thoroughly. Some twenty thousand unexploded bombs and grenades and five hundred tons of scrap metal was removed. So were all buildings, roads, bomb craters and other traces of the activity. A great effort was done restoring the destroyed vegetation, but at this altitude, 1100–1200 m, (and latitude) the plants need many years to do their job. Now 131 km2 of the former firing range have been incorporated into the adjoining national park.

This "viewpoint" is constructed as a rusty steel box with a glass wall and friendly interior materials. It is open day and night from the middle of June till the middle of October. There may be somebody there to answer your questions 10:00–15:00. Spending the night here is not permitted.

Waking (mostly) back from Viewpoint Snøhetta, 1.5 kilometres one way, a nice exercise for most of us.

To remove possible confusion:
Snøhetta: A mountain.
Snøhetta: An architect company.
Dovre: A mountain plateau.
Dovre: A municipality incorporating half of the Dovre mountains
and a lesser part of the Rondane mountains.
