A woodpecker pecked a hole and that made the branch on the opposite side fall off. Just now the sun is shining through.
Witches' brooms are not that common on coniferous trees, like on this pine.

On higher grounds a pine is often a couple of hundred years when it dies. However, it is impregnated with resin and may keep standing for another couple of hundred years. If nobody cuts it down for firewood; they burn extremely well.
